Trail Races in May in Spain 2026
May is one of the peak months for trail running in Spain. The calendar is packed with top-level events and conditions are unbeatable across most of the territory. Temperatures allow comfortable running even at long distances, the mountains are green and the days are long — a key factor for ultras that extend into the night. Many UTMB-qualifying events cluster in this part of the year. May is also when high mountain opens up: the Pyrenees and other ranges allow routes that are inaccessible in winter. It is the time to capitalise on peak season fitness.
For cold and dark miles
Headlamp, thermal layer and a good watch: what matters when daylight runs short.

Tips
Sun protection: the sun is already strong in May. SPF 50+ cream, visor cap and sunglasses are essential.
If your race is in high mountains, still bring thermal layers: at high altitudes temperatures can drop below 5 °C.
May has a high volume of races: plan carefully if you have multiple objectives to avoid overtraining.
