How we work out what to wear

When you run your body produces heat and you feel roughly 5-8 °C warmer than the thermometer says, so dressing for the real temperature makes you overheat. Wind subtracts degrees, easy effort subtracts them too, and runs over 5 h call for more clothing because you slow down. With that we compute an effective temperature and translate it into layers. To choose a jacket with more criteria, read the technical apparel guide for trail running.

FAQ: what to wear for running

How do I know what to wear for running?

Dress for how you will feel while running, not for the thermometer: running makes you feel about 5-8 °C warmer. If you start a little cold and feel comfortable after 10 minutes, you are dressed right.

How many layers do I need?

In the cold, three: a base layer that wicks sweat, a mid layer if it is very cold, and a windproof or waterproof outer layer. In the heat, a single technical tee.

Is it better to start a little cold?

Yes, it is the best clue: if you are a bit cold when you start, you will be fine after 10-15 minutes. If you start too warm you will sweat and get cold when you stop.

Which fabrics should I avoid?

Cotton: it holds sweat and chills you when you stop. Choose technical fabrics or merino wool, which dry quickly and regulate temperature.
