Berghaus
Berghaus Paclite 2.0 GTX
Waterproof jacket with a Gore-Tex Paclite membrane (around 330 g). Fully waterproof with taped seams, fixed adjustable hood, storm flap behind the zip and cuff adjustment. Packs down small in a vest. Heavier than a pure running hardshell, but it meets the waterproof-breathable membrane requirement in race rules and is the affordable route into Gore-Tex.

Brooks
Brooks Cascadia 20 GTX
The Cascadia 20 with a GORE-TEX membrane: stability and protection for rocky mountain terrain, keeping the foot dry on cold, rainy days.

Lightweight waterproof glove built for running, not just standing still in the snow: a waterproof membrane with more dexterity and less bulk than a thick membrane glove, for sustained rain without giving up handling gels or poles.

Salomon
Salomon Bonatti WP
Ultralight waterproof windproof jacket (135 g). Taped seams, adjustable hood and back ventilation. Packs into its own pocket.

Lakuntza-Aralar Mendi Lasterketa
The Lakuntza-Aralar Mendi Lasterketa is a mountain race that traverses the Aralar Natural Park starting from Lakuntza, a small village in the Barranca valley of Navarra. Now in its 21st edition (2026), the race has been running for over two decades, organized by the Zabalarte Mendi Taldea collective, dedicated to exploring, enjoying, and protecting the mountains.
The Courses
The Lakuntza-Aralar 26K (1,200m D+) is the long distance. A circular course from the main square in Lakuntza that climbs through beech forests to the summits of Aralar, passing through:
- Guardetxe — Shepherd’s refuge at the base of the summits
- Txorrotxeta — Summit with panoramic views over the Barranca valley and the Alavese Plain
- Irumugarrieta (~1,400m) — Highest point of the course, on the Navarra-Gipuzkoa border
The Lakuntza-Aralar 13K (650m D+) is the short distance. A more accessible course that shares the first kilometers with the 26K and offers a compact version of the Aralar experience.
There is also a non-competitive 13K mountain walk that covers the same route as the 13K in reverse. Open to all ages, it starts at 8:30 AM with a maximum of 50 participants.
Terrain and Difficulty
The course crosses the Aralar Natural Park: beech forests, highland meadows, shepherd trails, and summit ridges. Altitude ranges from 456 meters in Lakuntza to approximately 1,400 meters at the peaks. Moderately technical terrain with sections that can be wet or muddy, especially in the forests.
The 26K with 1,200m of elevation gain is a demanding race requiring previous mountain experience. The 13K is more accessible but not a beginner race: 650 meters of climbing in 13 km means sustained steep sections.
Mandatory Gear
The organization requires:
- Liquid container of at least 500 ml
- Thermal blanket
- Long-sleeved hooded windbreaker
Weather in Aralar can change rapidly, even in May. These safety measures are essential.
How to Get There
Lakuntza is in the Barranca valley of Navarra, 40 km from Pamplona via the A-10 motorway (towards Alsasua). From San Sebastián it’s 75 km via the AP-1.
