CxM Trabuco Trail
The CxM Trabuco Trail is a mountain race through the trails of the Sierra de San Jorge and the area around the headwaters of the Guadalhorce river, starting and finishing at the Trabulea adventure park in Villanueva del Trabuco. The 2026 edition is the fifth, consolidating its place on the trail running calendar of northern Málaga.
Villanueva del Trabuco sits in a privileged location: at the foot of Sierra Gorda, on the boundary between Málaga and Granada provinces, exactly where the Guadalhorce river — the artery that drains much of Málaga — is born. This setting offers a mid-mountain terrain of ravines, forest tracks and trails with strong Andalusian character.
A 23.5K route with 1,500m D+
The main modality is a circular 23.5 km loop with approximately 1,500 metres of positive elevation gain. The route covers:
- Mountain trails along the slopes of the Sierra de San Jorge
- Forest tracks connecting the higher zones
- Ravine sections with technical terrain and loose stone
- Ridge stretches with panoramic views over northern Málaga
The cut-off is 6 hours for the 23.5K and 4h30 for the Mini Trail 13K (800m D+), a more accessible option but still demanding in elevation. Both races share parts of the course and the same finish line.
May in the Málaga mountains
The May 2 date places the race at the start of the Andalusian heat. Mornings in Villanueva del Trabuco are still cool (10-12°C at dawn), but temperatures climb fast during the race and easily reach 22-25°C in the lower zones at midday. Hydration management and sun protection are decisive.
The race is organized by the Villanueva del Trabuco municipality together with the La Cabra Tira al Monte mountaineering club, under the Andalusian Mountaineering Federation (FAM). Services are complete: chip timing, multiple aid stations, medical support, locker rooms with showers, post-race meal and a runner bag with sponsor goodies.
Villanueva del Trabuco beyond the race
Villanueva del Trabuco is a village of just over 5,000 inhabitants with a genuinely rural feel. Its main attraction is the headwaters of the Guadalhorce, a protected natural site where the river bursts out spectacularly from a cave. Visiting it the day before or after the race is a great way to round out the trip.
The area is part of the Northeastern Málaga region, next to Antequera (half an hour away) with its UNESCO-listed dolmen heritage, and very close to Loja (Granada), the natural gateway to the Andalusian white villages.
