XtremeLagos
XtremeLagos is one of the best-known mountain races in eastern Asturias. In 2027 the marathon reaches its 19th edition, organized by Grupo de Montaña Peña Santa with the support of Cangas de Onís town council, and brings together three events on Saturday 8 May: the Marathon, the TrailXtreme and the kids’ PequeXtreme.
A demanding mountain course
The Marathon XtremeLagos (42 km, 6,000 m D+) starts at 08:00 from El Repelao in Covadonga and finishes in Cangas de Onís. The time limit is 10 hours, with an intermediate checkpoint at 6 h 15 min. That is serious climbing for the distance, so train long ascents and technical descents.
The TrailXtreme (14 km, about 2,000 m D+ according to the organizer) starts at 10:00 from Plaza de La Estrella in Cangas de Onís and passes places such as Vega Oñañes. Its time limit is 6 hours. The PequeXtreme (4 km) introduces younger runners to the mountains.
Gear and logistics
The rules require a hooded long-sleeve windproof jacket, a thermal blanket, a mobile phone and a liquid container. In May the weather in the Picos de Europa can change fast, so pack layers.
Cangas de Onís beyond the race
Cangas de Onís was the first capital of the Kingdom of Asturias and is the gateway to Covadonga and the Lakes. Visit the Roman Bridge and try the local cider. Discover more races in Asturias and plan your season with the race planner.
