Black Friday is the best time of the year to round out your trail kit, and also the best time to spend badly. The whole mechanic of the sale —countdown timers, “today only”, struck-through prices— pushes you to buy for the discount rather than for the need. This guide isn’t a list of doorbusters that expire in 24 hours: it’s a map of which categories are genuinely cheaper in November, which brands actually move and by how much, what you shouldn’t buy even when it’s on offer, and how to check in two minutes whether a lowered price is real.

When is Black Friday 2026?

Black Friday falls on Friday 27 November 2026. In practice, the big retailers open deals from the Monday before (23 November) and keep them running through Cyber Monday, 30 November. That long week is the useful window: whatever isn’t discounted on Monday rarely will be by Friday, and whatever sells out on Thursday doesn’t come back on Saturday.

One note that saves grief: Amazon extends the return window for purchases made during the holiday campaign into mid-January. If you’re unsure about a size, buying on Black Friday and returning in January is a legitimate move.

How to tell if a deal is real

“Was £150, now £90” means nothing on its own. The struck-through price is the RRP or a one-off price from months ago, not what the product cost last week.

  1. Check the price history. Tools like Keepa or CamelCamelCamel show a product’s real price curve on Amazon over the last year. If the “Black Friday price” is the same it was in September, it isn’t a deal: it’s the normal price with a red label.
  2. Look at the historical low, not the struck-through price. A good Black Friday discount gets close to the year’s low or beats it. If it stays 20% above July’s low, you can wait.
  3. Compare with the brand’s own store and with specialist retailers. Many trail brands (Salomon, La Sportiva, Petzl) run their own campaign with different terms from Amazon. The same model can be better on the official site.
  4. Be wary of “campaign-only” stock. Listings that only appear in November, from an unknown brand, with a sudden pile of recent reviews, are often products made for the occasion. For technical gear —headlamps, waterproofs, safety kit— this matters.

What IS worth buying on Black Friday

These are the categories where the November discount is common and genuine, and where it also lines up with what you’ll need this winter.

  • Previous-generation GPS watches. When a new model launches, the outgoing one is consistently discounted on Black Friday and it’s still the same watch. It’s the most cost-effective buy of the campaign. See the best value trail watches guide and, if you want battery life for ultras, the ultra trail watches guide.
  • Headlamps. You’re heading into the dark-running season and headlamps from Petzl, Black Diamond and Ledlenser drop well. It’s the moment to own two: your main one and a backup. See the headlamps guide.
  • Winter jackets and technical apparel. Waterproofs, windshells and thermal layers from the outgoing season fall in price right when you need them. See the technical trail apparel guide.
  • Hydration vests and packs. Benchmark models (Salomon, Compressport) and previous-season vests get clear discounts. A vest lasts years, so buying well here pays off. See the hydration vests guide.
  • Carbon poles. High ticket and rarely discounted the rest of the year: if you’ve been on the fence, this is the window. Trail running poles guide.
  • Recovery. Massage guns, compression boots and foam rollers are the category with the most aggressive discounts of the year (Theragun, Hyperice and clones). See the massage guns guide and the recovery gear guide.
  • Technical socks, in a multipack. Pure consumable. Buying three or four pairs at once on Black Friday is one of the few “bulk” purchases that makes sense. Trail running socks guide.

What NOT to buy on Black Friday (even on offer)

  • Shoes in a model you haven’t tried. Fit doesn’t return well by post, and the wrong size is £120 wasted and plantar fasciitis. If you know your model and exact size, go ahead; if not, try them in a shop first. Once you’re sure, the trail running shoes guide and the value trail shoes guide are your reference.
  • Nutrition in bulk. Gels and bars expire. Buying a box of 40 because it’s half price only makes sense if you race often and know you’ll use them before the date. Gels and nutrition guide.
  • Cheap safety gear from an unknown brand. Space blanket, whistle, backup headlamp, jacket with taped seams: if it’s mandatory in a race, buy from a brand that stands behind it. Saving £10 isn’t worth it failing at altitude. Mandatory emergency kit guide.
  • Anything you’re buying only because it’s discounted. The test is simple: would you have bought it last week at full price? If the answer is no, the discount isn’t a saving, it’s a cost.

Which brands discount, and by how much (rough guide)

No hard numbers —they change every year— but the pattern repeats:

  • Garmin: moderate discounts overall, good ones on the previous generation (a Forerunner or Fenix from the outgoing cycle). Just-launched models don’t move.
  • Coros, Suunto, Polar: less aggressive than Garmin on the watch alone, but bundles with a strap or heart-rate monitor included are common.
  • Salomon, La Sportiva, Hoka, Merrell: discount the outgoing season’s colours and models hard; new releases barely or not at all. Watch their official stores too.
  • Petzl, Black Diamond, Ledlenser, Nitecore: headlamps drop well on Black Friday. A good window to renew.
  • Theragun (Therabody), Hyperice: among the biggest discounts of the whole campaign, in recovery.
  • Maurten, Precision Fuel & Hydration, SIS, 226ERS: nutrition is rarely discounted meaningfully; bundles or trial packs at best.
  • Decathlon (Kiprun, Simond, Evadict): runs its own campaign, doesn’t always match Amazon and is often more interesting on its own site.

Checklist: round out your autumn/winter kit

Black Friday coincides with the change of season. If you’re missing any of these, now’s the time:

Gloves Cold hands in the first hours Gloves
Long tights Runs below 8-10 ºC Technical apparel
Thermal neck gaiter Regulate temperature without bulk Technical apparel

Visibility kit (rear light, reflective) Road and track runs at dusk Night running safety kit

FAQ

When exactly is Black Friday 2026?

Friday 27 November 2026. Deals from the big retailers start on Monday 23 and end with Cyber Monday, 30 November.

Does Amazon have the best trail gear deals?

Sometimes. For consumables (socks, gels, bottles) and electronics (watches, headlamps) it’s usually very competitive. For branded shoes and apparel, always compare with the brand’s official store and with a specialist retailer before buying.

Is it worth waiting for Black Friday to buy shoes?

Only if you already know which model and size you want. Don’t offset the discount against the risk of guessing the fit by post.

How do I check whether a discount is real?

Look up the product’s price history (Keepa, CamelCamelCamel) and compare the “Black Friday price” with its lowest price over the last twelve months, not with the struck-through price.

Can I return a Black Friday gift if it doesn’t fit?

Amazon extends the return window for holiday-campaign purchases into mid-January. Check the product page before buying, as it doesn’t apply to every category.

What if I don’t need anything?

Then the best deal is not to buy. Black Friday rewards knowing in advance what you’re missing; improvising from a wishlist is how you overspend.

In short

Come into the week of 27 November with a short list of what you’re genuinely missing —usually a headlamp, a jacket and a consumable or two—, check the price history of each item before hitting buy, and use the extended return window if you’re unsure about a size. The categories that almost always pay off are previous-generation watches, headlamps, outgoing winter apparel and recovery. And if halfway through the campaign you catch yourself justifying a purchase by the discount, that’s exactly the one to skip.
