Terrain
Liguria is a narrow strip where the mountain drops straight into the sea: the coastal paths of Cinque Terre and Portofino add up to thousands of stone steps, and a few kilometres inland the Ligurian Alps climb to Monte Saccarello (2,201 m) with rock, beech woods and high pasture. Behind Genoa, the Apennines (Monte Beigua, Aveto valley) offer dense forest, humidity and constant climbing. The ground is technical thanks to stone and steps, and there is almost never a long straight to run.
Key areas
Climate & best season
The Ligurian coast has mild winters (8-12 °C) and humid, sticky summers: races cluster between March and June and in October-November. In the Ligurian Alps the climate is alpine, with snow from December to March and afternoon storms in summer. Rain is plentiful all year (Genoa is one of Italy's wettest cities), so wet stone is the norm.
Trail culture
Liguria is the Italian region with the most climbing per kilometre: short, wild races are born here, like the Trail del Marchesato along the cliffs of the French border and the Ultra Trail del Monte Beigua, which starts at the sea. Ligurian trail running happens between olive trees and dry-stone walls, with aid stations serving focaccia, farinata and Cinque Terre white wine, and a very strong community in Ventimiglia, Savona and La Spezia.
