Terrain

Val Masino, in the province of Sondrio, is pure granite: giant boulders, fixed ropes and passes above 2,500 m. Lombard mountains reward those with technique and a cool head on exposed ground; this is genuine skyrunning.

From June to September the high mountains are accessible; August, Trofeo Kima time, is the most stable window, though snowfields can persist at height and afternoon storms are common.

Trail culture

Lombardy is the cradle of Italian skyrunning. The Trofeo Kima, biennial since 2008, honours Pierangelo Marchetti, "Kima", a mountain guide who died on a rescue, and is one of the toughest races on the world circuit.
