Terrain
Sardinia packs two rock worlds: the rounded granite and pastures of the Gennargentu in the centre (Punta La Marmora, 1,834 m), and the vertical limestone of the Supramonte and the Gulf of Orosei in the east, with gorges, holm oak forest and coves reachable only on foot or by boat. In the southwest, the Sulcis Mountains repeat granite and scrub. The ground is very technical thanks to loose stone, with sand sections, dense scrub and short but constant climbs; heat and mistral are as hard as the gradients.
Key areas
Climate & best season
The Sardinian calendar avoids summer: races run from February to May and in October-November, when the thermometer sits between 10 and 22 °C. July and August are impossible for daytime running (38-40 °C) and also carry peak wildfire risk. In winter the interior can freeze at night and the mistral drops the wind chill; on the coast, November is still mild.
Trail culture
Sardinian trail running is young and very local: the Trail del Marganai, in the old mining southwest, opens the season in March with 100 km of granite and forest, and the races of the Supramonte and Ogliastra mix goat paths, shepherds and coves. Hospitality is the signature: aid stations with pecorino, pane carasau, oranges and mirto, and whole villages turning out for every race. Here trail running still feels like something of the island, not an international circuit.
