Iturbero Trail: 10.5 punchy km by the Lumbier Gorge
Iturbero Trail is the trail race of Lumbier (Irunberri in Basque), organised by the Iturbero Korrikalari Taldea club. It is named after the Iturbero area at the entrance of the Lumbier Gorge (Foz de Lumbier), one of the most spectacular limestone canyons of the Navarrese Pre-Pyrenees and a nature reserve home to a large griffon vulture colony.
Short but serious: 10.5 km with about 550 m of elevation gain, more than 50 metres of climbing per kilometre. It is part of the Herri Krosa calendar, the popular race league of Navarra and the Basque Country, and drew 205 runners last edition.
A short course with plenty of climbing
- 10.5 km single course
- ~550 m D+ in short, steep ramps
- Trails around the Gorge, with technical descents
- Records: 47:42 (men) and 59:21 (women)
The race rewards runners who can switch gears: power-hike the climbs and let go on the descents. In November the ground is usually wet, so deep-lug shoes make a difference.
November in the Pre-Pyrenees
The start is mid-morning on a Sunday in mid-November. Expect 5-12 °C, possible north wind and mud. Start warm with arm warmers and a buff you can stash in your belt, and shed layers on the first climb.
Lumbier beyond the race
Make a weekend of it: walk the Lumbier Gorge along the old Irati railway, with its rock tunnels and the Devil’s Bridge, or visit the nearby Arbayún Gorge. Sangüesa and Leyre Monastery are minutes away. See more races in Navarra and plan your season with the planner.
