Short answer

Running at 10 °C, your body feels like about 15 °C, so dress as if it were 15 °C.

Rule of thumb: running makes you feel 5-8 °C warmer than the thermometer says. Dress for how you will feel once moving, not for the air temperature.

Running at 10 °C (50 °F): the trickiest temperature

10 °C is where people get it wrong most often: you set off cold and 15 minutes later you are sweating. Dressing as if it were 10 °C warmer saves you from overdoing it, and sleeves you can push up or take off solve the rest.

A short or thin long-sleeve technical shirt, with shorts or 3/4 tights depending on your cold tolerance, covers most runs. Add an ultralight windbreaker if it is windy or you will be climbing: it is the item that saves the most weight.

It is an ideal temperature to train: your body performs well and sweat evaporates without chilling you. If you go out early or late, hands are usually the only thing you will miss; thin gloves are enough.

Recommended kit, item by item

Head and neck

Light cap or visor. Keep a thin buff in your pocket in case it cools down.

Torso

Short-sleeve technical tee. Add arm sleeves if you start cool and warm up later.

Legs

Shorts. If you start cool, shorts with arm sleeves beat full tights.

Hands

No gloves needed.

Feet

Technical socks without thick seams: they dry fast and prevent blisters.

Sun

Even when it is not hot, ridges and open trails are sun-exposed: sunglasses and sunscreen (lips included).

Frequently asked questions

Short or long sleeves at 10 °C?

It depends on your pace. At a hard pace, short sleeves and arm sleeves; at an easy pace or in wind, a thin long-sleeve. If in doubt, choose long sleeves: it is easier to shed heat than to add a jacket.

Shorts or tights at 10 °C?

Many runners wear shorts and only switch to tights when it is windy or wet. 3/4 tights are a good middle ground, especially on long runs.

How do I avoid overheating at 10 °C?

Leave with one layer less than you think you need. If you still feel a little cold in the first ten minutes, you are dressed right.
