Ultra Pirineu

Ultra Pirineu is a 100K race with 6,400m of elevation gain along the Cadí Range in the Catalan Pyrenees. It is part of the UTMB World Series. Three distances: 100K, 54K, and 30K. Held in October from Bagà (Barcelona).

Ultra Pirineu is one of the most prestigious ultra trail races in Europe and is part of the UTMB World Series. It traverses the Cadí Range and the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, in the heart of the Catalan Pyrenees, with high-mountain landscapes ranging from fir forests to rocky ridgelines above 2,500 meters.

The course

The Ultra 100K has 6,400m of elevation gain and runs along the Cadí Range from Bagà. The passage over Pedraforca (2,506m) and the Cadí Ridge are the most spectacular highlights.

The circular 100 km course starts and finishes in Bagà. Runners will ascend the main peaks of the Cadí Range, including:

  • Pedraforca (2,506m) - The forked mountain, an icon of the Catalan Pyrenees
  • Cadí Ridge - A traverse along the longest ridge in the Pyrenees
  • Prat d’Aguiló - Mountain refuge at 2,000m
  • Fir and black pine forests - Transitions between altitudinal zones

UTMB World Series

Ultra Pirineu is part of the UTMB World Series. Completing the Ultra 100K awards 6 UTMB Index points, enough for direct qualification for UTMB in Chamonix.

Since its inclusion in the UTMB World Series, the race has gained international recognition. Elite runners from around the world take part, turning Bagà into a top-tier event every October. The points earned count toward qualification for the UTMB Mont-Blanc races. Check our ITRA points guide to understand the qualification system.

Night racing

The Ultra 100K has a 27-hour time limit. Most runners spend the night in the mountains. A powerful headlamp with spare batteries is mandatory. Nighttime temperatures in October drop below 0 degrees at the higher elevations.

Managing the night is one of the key factors in this race. Temperatures on the ridges can drop to -5 degrees in October, and fog can reduce visibility. It is essential to carry full thermal clothing and know how to manage sleep during long races.

Use our time estimator to set realistic goals for the 100K, and review the mandatory gear guide to prepare for the extensive equipment list. Discover more races in Catalonia.
