Schwarzwald-Marathon
The Schwarzwald-Marathon is the world’s oldest nature marathon, held without interruption since 1968 in Bräunlingen, a small town in the Black Forest region of Baden-Württemberg. In 2026 it celebrates its 58th edition on the weekend of October 10-11, cementing its place as a fixture of the German calendar that blends tradition, local community, and a mid-mountain course accessible to runners looking for their first marathon off the road.
A route through conifer forest
The main 42.195 km course winds through forest tracks and packed-earth trails between dense pine and fir woods, with about 620 metres of accumulated elevation gain spread across gentle, steady climbs rather than extreme ramps. The half marathon (21K) shares much of the route and serves as a perfect entry point for those wanting to try the atmosphere without committing to the full distance. There are also 10K, 5K, and a relay marathon (Staffelmarathon) designed for groups and companies.
Nearly six decades of history
Few races in the world can claim almost 60 uninterrupted years of history. The Schwarzwald-Marathon began in 1968 as a local event and has grown into a race that draws runners from across Germany and neighbouring countries, without losing its character as a village festival: the whole town of Bräunlingen pitches in with the organisation, with aid stations staffed by residents and local clubs.
The Black Forest beyond the race
Bräunlingen sits within easy reach of Freiburg im Breisgau and Lake Titisee, two of the most visited destinations in southwest Germany. Using race weekend to explore Black Forest trails, try the local cuisine (the original Black Forest cake comes from this region), or visit artisan cuckoo clock workshops rounds out an experience that goes well beyond crossing the finish line. Check out the rest of the races in Germany and plan your season with the race planner.

Schwarzwald-Marathon 2026 registration
RegistrationThe organiser (LSG Schwarzwald-Marathon e.V.) manages tiered pricing by how early you register. As a century-old race with generous capacity, bibs don't sell out as fast as some alpine events, but register before summer to lock in the lowest rate.
Browse all registrationTips
- •Register before July for the cheapest price
- •The relay marathon (Staffelmarathon) is a great option for groups who don't want to run the full 42K solo
Where to sleep for the Schwarzwald-Marathon
AccommodationBräunlingen is a small town; most runners stay in Donaueschingen or Villingen-Schwenningen, 15-20 minutes away by car, with more hotel options.
Browse all accommodationTips
- •Book 2-3 months ahead: October coincides with peak hiking season in the Black Forest
- •Rural guesthouses (Gasthof) near Bräunlingen offer the most authentic atmosphere
Gear for the Schwarzwald-Marathon
