Harz-Gebirgslauf (Brocken-Marathon)

The Harz-Gebirgslauf, popularly known as the Brocken-Marathon, is considered northern Germany’s most demanding mountain marathon. Starting at Himmelpforte, on the outskirts of Wernigerode, the race climbs to the Brocken summit (1,141 m), the highest point of the Harz massif and a place steeped in legend in German folklore, long tied to Walpurgisnacht witch tales. In 2026 it celebrates its 48th edition on October 10.

A climb with over 1,200 metres of elevation gain

Although the Brocken barely tops 1,100 metres in altitude, the marathon accumulates over 1,200 metres of elevation gain across its 42.195 km, a figure that surprises those unfamiliar with the Harz. The course combines firm forest tracks in the early kilometres with more open, rocky stretches as it gains height, where wind and fog are common features even in mid-October. The 11K and 5K distances let less experienced runners enjoy part of the surroundings without tackling the full summit.

A massif of legends and its own weather

The Brocken is famous for generating its own microclimate, with thick fog and winds that can exceed 100 km/h on the most extreme days, exceptional for a mountain of its altitude. This combination of capricious weather and constant elevation gain is what has earned the Harz-Gebirgslauf its reputation as a tough race, highly respected among German mountain marathoners for over 45 years.

Wernigerode beyond the race

Wernigerode, with its historic half-timbered old town and hilltop castle, is one of the most photogenic towns in the Harz. The historic Brockenbahn steam train, which climbs to the very summit, is a must after the race, as are the nearby towns of Quedlinburg and Goslar, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Discover the rest of the races in Germany and plan your calendar with the race planner.
