Terrain
The Black Forest is a densely wooded mid-mountain massif, topped by the Feldberg at 1,493 metres. The terrain combines technical trails through conifers, glacial valleys like Titisee, and fast descents into traditional villages. There's no extreme altitude, but the accumulated elevation gain and density of roots and rock make the terrain demanding for distance runners.
Key areas
Climate & best season
The Black Forest has a humid, cool climate, with rainfall spread throughout the year. October, when the Schwarzwald-Marathon takes place, offers mild temperatures and forests in full autumn colour, though a waterproof layer is worth carrying given the chance of rain.
Trail culture
The Schwarzwald-Marathon, held since 1968 in Bräunlingen, is a fixture of the German calendar and one of Europe's oldest nature marathons. The region's trail community mixes road marathoners looking for their first mountain marathon with ultra specialists who use the Black Forest as a training base thanks to its dense network of well-marked trails.
