Coves, limestone and 3,000 m of climbing

The Trail des Calanques is the race of the Calanques national park, that chain of turquoise coves between Marseille and Cassis. It starts at the Luminy tennis club and packs 56 km and 3,000 m of climbing into the Marseilleveyre and Puget massifs, with technical passages on sharp rock.

The start is at 06:30 in the dark, to catch sunrise over the Sugiton and En Vau coves. The ground gives nothing away: limestone steps, sand in the coves and sections where hands come into play.

Three distances

The 36 km Sugiton (2,000 m) covers the upper massif and the 19 km Marseilleveyre (1,000 m) reaches the harbour viewpoint. All three finish at Pastré park by the sea.

Preparation and park rules

February in Marseille is tricky: 18 °C or a full mistral. The national park forbids leaving the trail and there are no water points, so carry two hours of water. Mandatory kit includes windproof, thermal blanket and a charged phone.

Sleeping in central Marseille or Cassis puts you 20 minutes from the start. More Mediterranean races at /en/races/francia/provenza-alpes-costa-azul/ and kit at /en/planner/.
