Berghaus Paclite 2.0 GTX
Waterproof jacket with a Gore-Tex Paclite membrane (around 330 g). Fully waterproof with taped seams, fixed adjustable hood, storm flap behind the zip and cuff adjustment. Packs down small in a vest. The Cascadia 20 with a GORE-TEX membrane: stability and protection for rocky mountain terrain, keeping the foot dry on cold, rainy days.

Festival des Templiers: the founding epic of French trail
The Festival des Templiers is the biggest mountain trail event in France and one of the founding pillars of European trail running: 32 editions since 1995, 13,000 runners from 45 countries, and 18 races run at the same time on the Causses of Millau, the most technical limestone plateau in the country. It is not a single-loop race that draws people in: it is a rural, human-scale festival that turns Millau and its mountain villages into the centre of the trail community for four days.
The 2026 edition will keep the format: distances for everyone, from an 8 km introductory race to the L’Endurance Trail over 100 km with 4,300 metres of elevation gain. But the emblematic test is the Grand Trail des Templiers over 80.7 km: the exact distance that defines how hard the Causses are.
A course of loose stone and no shade
The Causses of Millau are a limestone plateau made technical by nature: paths of fine and coarse loose stone, deep gorges cut by the Tarn and the Jonte, a flat horizon without a single tree to shelter under. At 1,000 metres of altitude, October brings long, clear days, but the sun reflected off the white limestone is relentless.
The Grand Trail route links the classic names of the Causses:
- Causse Noir (the black plateau, named after its dark stones)
- Causse du Larzac (the great Roquefort lies below)
- The gorges of the Tarn and the Jonte, epigenetic ravines with 500-metre escarpments
- Villages such as Nant, La Cavalerie, Aguessac: authentic, small, free of mass tourism
The terrain is ruthless with your feet: technical descents where one misplaced step costs you a rolled ankle, climbs where the loose stone forces you to push with your hands. At 50 km the quadriceps scream. At 70 km your feet are a single burning lump. At 80 there is nothing left but to finish.
Causses: heat, altitude and isolation
October in the Causses is deceptive: the calendar says autumn, but at 1,000 metres of altitude, in full sun and with no forest, the temperature climbs. Solar radiation is the main enemy, not the cold. Dehydration lurks: without shade the body loses water constantly.
The aid stations of the Festival are legendary for their generosity (fresh fruit, homemade biscuits, isotonic drinks), but in a 15-18 hour ultra self-sufficiency is vital. Carrying your own gels, salt tablets and food keeps your energy steady in a way that the aid stations alone cannot cover. And carbon poles are no luxury: the descents of the Larzac ask for smart knees, not heroic ones.
The Causses beyond the Festival
Millau is Roquefort, the viaduct suspended in mid-air, villages of a thousand inhabitants where the stone of the region is the currency. It is worth stretching the weekend trip into a week-long one: drive around the region, taste sheep’s-milk cheeses and local wines, and watch how the white mountain becomes part of the identity of Occitanie.
If this is your first French trail running festival, the Templiers will show you why France is the cradle of the sport: sustainability, community, history and relentless nature, all of it in October on the Causses. Afterwards the UTMB in Chamonix awaits in September, and you will have completed the founding pair: Alps and Causses, altitude and technique, snow and stone.

- •Bib + safety wristband + drinks and food at the aid stations
Where to stay for the Festival des Templiers
AccommodationMillau is a small town of 22,000 people right in the heart of the Causses. October is vineyard and rural tourism season: the hotels fill up fast. It is worth extending the trip to explore the villages of the Causses.
Tips
- •Millau centre: 3 and 4 star hotels and country houses. Book early.
- •Nearby villages (La Cavalerie, Nant, Aguessac): quieter, cheaper, full of character
- •Rural campsites: a very common budget option for the Templiers (mild weather in October)
- •Arriving on Friday the 15th lets you get used to the altitude and scout the area
Gear for the Festival des Templiers
GearTechnical loose-stone terrain and deep gorges. The radiation on the plateau is brutal: mountain sunglasses are a must. The elevation gain and the exposure turn poles into a tool rather than a luxury. Drink constantly: the October heat on the Causses shows no mercy.
Tips
- •Shoes with aggressive grip: the loose stone of the Causses punishes your heel on every step
- •Carbon poles for the technical descents (they save your knees)
- •10-15 L hydration pack: carry at least 1.5-2 L of fluid
- •Mountain sunglasses with category 3 lenses (lots of sun, very little shade on the plateau)

Nutrition for the Festival des Templiers
NutritionUltra distance in open, unprotected landscape. The energy cost is enormous and, although the aid stations are good, you still need to supplement with your own food. Salt is critical: dehydration lurks in October with radiation at 1,000 m.
Tips
- •Gels every 45-60 minutes of continuous effort
- •Salt from hour 1: sun radiation plus altitude = fast dehydration
- •Solid food at the aid stations (nuts, dates, bananas)
- •Hydration: 500-750 ml every 30 minutes on exposed ground
How to get to Millau
TransportMillau sits in the heart of Occitanie, 3 hours from Toulouse, 3.5 from Montpellier and 4 from Marseille. October is long-weekend season in France: the congestion can be significant.
Tips
- •From Toulouse: the A68 towards Albi, then the D999 or D911 to Millau (~180 km, 2.5 h)
- •From Montpellier: the A75 north towards Clermont (the Causses motorway), exit Millau (~200 km, 2h30)
- •From Marseille or Nice: the A8 and then the A75 towards Millau
- •Train: Millau station with connections to Toulouse (Intercités) and Montpellier. A car is more flexible.
Car rental for the Festival des Templiers
Car RentalThe Causses have to be driven around outside the race itself. The aviation museum, the Millau viaduct, medieval villages, viewpoints over the Causses. A car opens up the whole region.
Tips
- •Use the trip to visit the Millau viaduct (3 km from the centre, a spectacular piece of engineering)
- •A loop around the Causses: Nant, La Cavalerie, Aguessac, Creissels
- •The villages of the Causses (Micropolis in Saint-Léon-de-Udge, the medieval circus of Nant) are authentic
- •October is harvest time: local wines are easy to find (Roquefort is half an hour away)
Sports insurance for the Festival des Templiers
InsuranceUltra-distance racing in unprotected mountains. A French federation licence (FFMULTISPORTS) or a day sports insurance policy is compulsory. Rescue on the Causses is coordinated but it requires cover.
Tips
- •FFMULTISPORTS licence or day sports insurance is mandatory
- •If you come from another country: make sure you have mountain rescue cover
- •Travel insurance with sports cover if you fly (plane + trail)
- •Phone charged: 4G coverage is good on the plateau
Sun protection for the Festival des Templiers
Sun ProtectionSolar radiation on the Causses at 1,000 m of altitude is brutal. October sounds mild, but the plateau is merciless: open sky, no trees, radiation bounced back by the white limestone. Sunburn is guaranteed if you do not protect yourself properly.
Tips
- •Sweat-resistant SPF50+: reapply every 2 hours or after drinking
- •Sunscreen on the ears, neck, backs of hands and feet (the forgotten spots)
- •SPF50 lip balm: lips burn in 30 minutes on the Causses
- •Mineral sunscreen (zinc/titanium) works better than chemical under long, intense exposure
Body care for the Festival des Templiers
Body CareExtreme elevation gain (3,400+ m D+), relentless technical terrain and a long distance: feet, hips and knees suffer. Anti-chafe balm, specific socks and quality mountain sunglasses are the details that keep you from dropping out.
Tips
- •Anti-chafe lubricant on feet, groin and armpits from km 0
- •Specific trail socks (merino or moisture-wicking synthetics): change them at the aid stations
- •Blister plasters in the aid bags: quick action = race saved
- •Quality sunglasses with UV protection: eye fatigue kills your pace over long distances
