Trail Trans Serra da Groba

Trail Trans Serra da Groba is the mountain race of Baiona (Pontevedra), at the southern tip of the Rías Baixas. It runs through the Serra da Groba, a low but genuinely wild coastal massif covered in gorse and Atlantic scrub that drops straight into the ocean. The long race is 29 kilometres with around 1,000 metres of positive elevation, and there is a 16.5-kilometre Trailiño for anyone looking for a first mountain experience.

A 29-kilometre course

The route climbs from sea level to the ridges of the range on forest tracks and paths through the gorse, with technical granite-rock sections and muddy patches in the hollows. There is no single big climb, but the terrain breaks your rhythm constantly and the Atlantic wind hits as soon as you gain height. The views over the Cíes islands, the Vigo estuary and the mouth of the Miño are the reward.

The wild horses of A Groba

The Serra da Groba holds one of the largest populations of wild horses in Galicia, the so-called garranos or bestas, which graze free all year and gather in herds managed by the local besteiros. You are very likely to meet several during the race. Watch them from a distance, without disturbing or feeding them.

Baiona beyond the race

Baiona was the first port in Europe to receive news of the discovery of America, when the caravel La Pinta arrived in March 1493.
