Trail Buciero Escal
Trail Buciero Escal is a mountain race with a seafaring flavour, held in Santoña, on the eastern coast of Cantabria. Its course loops around Monte Buciero, a limestone peninsula covered by one of the best-preserved Cantabrian holm-oak forests in northern Spain, dotted with 19th-century artillery batteries and cliffs that drop straight into the sea. The 5th edition (2026) keeps two options: the 17.9 km Trail x Montaña with 1,028 m D+ and the 13.4 km Trailuco Andarín for walkers.
A 17.9-kilometre course
Despite its moderate distance, the Buciero Escal is a demanding and very technical race. The terrain changes constantly: you start on tarmac through central Santoña, link concrete access roads to the forts, drop onto dirt and mud trails inside the holm-oak forest, and tackle rock sections next to the sea. The highlight is the area around the Faro del Caballo, famous for its 763 steps carved into the cliff. With almost 60 metres of climbing per kilometre and fast descents over wet rock, downhill technique makes the difference.
Santoña, the Buciero and anchovies
Santoña is a fishing town with two hallmarks: its anchovy canneries, the most prestigious in Spain, and Monte Buciero, part of the Santoña, Victoria and Joyel Marshes Natural Park, one of the most important wetlands on the Cantabrian coast for migratory birds. The San Martín and San Carlos forts, which the course skirts, recall the town’s military past.
October on the Cantabrian coast
In mid-October, the eastern coast of Cantabria offers mild temperatures (12-18 °C) but changeable weather: foggy mornings, fast showers coming in off the sea and constant humidity in the forest. A light waterproof and shoes with good grip are essential. See more races in Cantabria and plan your weekend with the planner.
