Anguiano Trail

Anguiano Trail is the mountain race of Anguiano (La Rioja), the village of the stilt dance, in the Najerilla valley. It starts on the extremely steep Cuesta de los Danzadores and climbs to the summits that separate the valley from the Sierra de la Demanda. The third edition (2026) keeps its two distances: Cumbres, 24 kilometres and 1,500 metres of positive elevation, and Valles, 15 kilometres and 819 metres. It is part of the La Rioja Mountain Races circuit.

A 24-kilometre course

The route leaves the village on beech-wood and pine paths and gains height to the summit pastures, with panoramas over the Mansilla reservoir, the Sierra de la Demanda and the Najerilla valley. It links sustained climbs with technical descents through wet woodland. At more than 60 metres of climbing per kilometre and the cold of late October, it is a demanding mid-mountain race.

Anguiano and the stilt dance

Anguiano is famous for its stilt dance: the dancers descend the Cuesta de los Danzadores — the same street where the race starts — spinning on 45-centimetre wooden stilts, in honour of the Virgin of the Magdalena. It is one of the most spectacular and dangerous traditions in Spanish folklore, declared of National Tourist Interest.

Anguiano beyond the race

The Najerilla valley is one of the most beautiful areas of the Rioja Alta: nearby are the monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla (World Heritage site and birthplace of written Spanish), the Valvanera monastery and the Mansilla reservoir. See more races in La Rioja and plan your weekend with the planner.
