Italy is a mountain country from north to south: the Alpine arc, from Monte Bianco to the Dolomites, holds the big-vert trail; the Pre-Alpine lakes of Lombardy and Piedmont offer technical paths beside the water; and Etna brings the only active volcanic terrain in mainland Europe's reach.
