Falcotrail
Falcotrail is the big mountain race of Cehegín (Murcia), in the Northwest district, and the finale of the Region of Murcia’s trail season. It starts at the Roman Arch in the old town and runs through the Sierra de Burete, the Sierra del Quípar and the Fuentes del Marqués. The queen race is a 71-kilometre ultra with 3,600 metres of positive elevation, alongside distances of 47, 22 and 11 kilometres. It is the last event of the Trail Tour FAMU and Ultra Trail Tour FAMU circuits.
A 71-kilometre course
The ultra sets off before dawn from Cehegín and climbs into the sierra through pine and holm-oak woods, with long limestone ridges overlooking the Argos and Quípar valleys. It links sustained climbs, technical descents and track sections, with the added demand of late-November cold: frost at dawn and frequent fog on the higher ground. In 2024 the race hosted the Spanish Ultra Trail Championship, which says a lot about its level.
The Northwest district
The Murcian Northwest is the highest and greenest part of the region: sierras of Aleppo and black pine, cereal and almond fields, and an almost continental climate. Cehegín keeps one of the best-preserved historic centres in Murcia, with 16th-18th century palaces, and at its foot lies the Ibero-Roman and Visigothic site of Begastri.
Cehegín beyond the race
Ten minutes away is Caravaca de la Cruz, one of the five holy cities of Catholicism, with its Vera Cruz Sanctuary and its perpetual Jubilee Year. The Fuentes del Marqués, an oasis of water and shade on the edge of Caravaca, are the best recovery plan. See more races in Murcia and plan your weekend with the planner.
