Desafío Cucón - Montes de Fuencaliente

Desafío Cucón is a mountain race through the Montes de Fuencaliente, in the far south of Ciudad Real province, where the Manchegan plateau breaks against Sierra Morena. The 4th edition (2026) keeps its format of 29 kilometres and around 1,400 metres of positive elevation and is the fourth scoring round of the Castilla-La Mancha CxM Cup, alongside a hiking route within the regional circuit.

A 29-kilometre course

The route runs entirely on mountain trails with constant rolling terrain: there are no long flat sections, and climbs and descents link one after another through holm-oak woods, reforested pine and open slate ridges. The terrain is fast but quad-wrecking, with stony ground that demands attention on the descents. The ratio is around 48 metres of climbing per kilometre, enough to make it demanding without being alpine.

Sierra Morena and the Valle de Alcudia

Fuencaliente is the southern gateway of Castilla-La Mancha and borders the Valle de Alcudia and Sierra Madrona Natural Park, one of the best-preserved areas of Sierra Morena, with wolf, Spanish imperial eagle and black vulture populations. The town also holds the schematic rock art of Peña Escrita and La Batanera, a World Heritage site.

October in southern Ciudad Real

In mid-October the mornings are cool (5-10 °C) but the midday sun still bites, and much of the course runs on sun-facing slopes. A windbreaker for the start and sun protection for the rest are equally necessary. See more races in Castilla-La Mancha and plan your weekend with the planner.
