Desafío Las Reliquias

Desafío Las Reliquias is one of the most historically charged races on the Asturian calendar. Organized by the Hermandad de los Estudiantes, it recreates on foot the transfer that King Alfonso II the Chaste made in the year 808 of the Holy Ark from Monsacro to Oviedo Cathedral, along the route known as La Perdonanza.

From the mountains to the heart of Oviedo

The main route links La Foz de Morcín, the starting point at 9:00 AM, with Oviedo Cathedral square, the finish expected around 3:30 PM. With 27K and 1,590m of gain (1,610m of loss), the race combines a demanding mountain first half with a final urban stretch to Oviedo’s historic center. There’s also an 11K walking category, between El Palomar and the cathedral, for those who prefer a more accessible challenge.

A route with centuries of history

The race’s origin connects to the legend of the Holy Ark, the box that tradition says contains sacred relics transferred from Jerusalem to Asturias fleeing invasions. The race route largely follows the historic path of that royal transfer, giving it a unique character among the region’s mountain races.

Beyond the race in Oviedo

Crossing the finish line at the cathedral square, with the Cámara Santa and Oviedo’s pre-Romanesque complex in the background, is one of the highlights of this race. After the race, take the chance to explore Oviedo’s historic center or discover other races in the Asturias region. Check the race planner to organize the full weekend.
