La Pretoriana

La Pretoriana is the popular ultramarathon of Tomares, in Seville’s Aljarafe area. Organized by Club Ultrafondo Pretorianos de Tomares alongside the Town Council, it’s a non-competitive event designed for recreational runners to complete 50 kilometers by mixing running and walking, with a generous 9-hour cutoff. Its accessible format has made it a fixture on the November Seville race calendar, drawing hundreds of participants from across Spain each edition.

A 50-Kilometer Route Through Pine Forests and the Aljarafe

The route starts in the pine forests of Aznalcázar, deep in the Seville countryside, and follows mostly flat paths and tracks to the center of Tomares. Runners who prefer a shorter distance can opt for the 33K trail, starting further along the same course. There’s no major elevation gain: the challenge of La Pretoriana is the distance and effort management, not technical difficulty.

A Race for First-Time Ultra Runners

For many recreational runners, La Pretoriana is their first taste of ultra-distance running. The non-competitive format, with no time-based ranking, and the generous cutoff make this race a common gateway before taking on more demanding mountain ultras.

Tomares and the Aljarafe Beyond the Race

Tomares is part of the Seville metropolitan area, in the Aljarafe region, known for its food scene and views over the Guadalquivir valley. Seville city, with its monuments and nightlife, is just minutes away. Check out more races in Andalusia and plan your weekend with the trip planner.
