Anboto KB

Anboto KB is the vertical kilometre of the Duranguesado: it climbs from the Arrazola district (Atxondo, Bizkaia), at the foot of the north face, to the summit of Anboto (1,331 m), gaining around 1,092 metres of positive elevation in under 5 kilometres. It is organised by Asuntze Mendi Taldea and scores for the Basque Country Vertical Kilometre Cup.

A 5-kilometre course, all uphill

The race starts already steep on meadows and beech-wood paths, and from halfway it becomes a scramble over grass and limestone rock with ramps of more than 40%. The final section, on the ridge, forces you to use your hands. There is not a metre of flat or downhill: it is continuous effort, almost breathless, from 30 minutes for the best to an hour and a half for the rest.

The Saturday of the Anboto weekend

Anboto KB is held on the Saturday, and the next day Sorginen Lasterketa runs the same massif from Axpe. Many runners do both races as a themed weekend around the most myth-laden mountain in the Basque Country, home of the goddess Mari.

Atxondo beyond the race

Arrazola is a handful of farmhouses at the foot of an imposing wall; Axpe, a few kilometres away, is famous for its food, and the Urkiola pass with its sanctuary and beech wood rounds off the plan. See more races in the Basque Country and plan your weekend with the planner.
