Short answer

In these conditions (about 10 °C air temperature), running will feel like about 12 °C. This is the recommended kit:

Rule of thumb: running makes you feel 5-8 °C warmer than the thermometer says. Dress for how you will feel once moving, not for the air temperature.

Running in the rain: staying warm and protected

In rain at around 10 °C, the problem is not getting wet but getting cold: wet clothes lose heat very fast. A waterproof, breathable jacket, not just a windbreaker, is the item that decides whether the run is pleasant or miserable.

Underneath, a technical layer that does not hold water: no cotton. In cold rain, a cap with a peak keeps water out of your eyes and thin gloves stop your hands going numb when the jacket no longer reaches.

Look after your feet: technical or merino wool socks and, if you can, shoes with good drainage. And protect what matters: a light phone pouch saves you some scares.

Recommended kit, item by item

Head and neck

Thin buff or headband that covers the ears: the best warmth-to-weight item you can carry.

Torso

Light long sleeve, or a tee with arm sleeves: sleeves come off on the move and fit in a pocket.

Outer layer

Waterproof shell or jacket with sealed seams. In cold rain it is what keeps hypothermia away.

Legs

3/4 or light full-length tights. If you feel the cold or will stop, go full length.

Hands

Waterproof gloves: fabric ones soak through and cool you more than no gloves at all.

Feet

Mid-height technical socks, with some merino if your feet will get wet.

Frequently asked questions

Rain jacket or windbreaker for running in the rain?

A rain jacket, especially if the rain is continuous. A windbreaker handles drizzle but soaks through in sustained rain. If you use one, choose one with a water-repellent treatment.

How do I avoid chafing when it rains?

Apply anti-chafe balm on armpits, thighs and feet before setting off. Water softens skin, and friction brings chafing and blisters within a few kilometres.

Can you run in heavy rain?

Yes, if there is no thunderstorm or flood risk. In that case, switch to an open, safe area and avoid riverbeds, gullies and exposed ridges.
