Dolomiti Extreme Trail: 102 km through Val di Zoldo

Dolomiti Extreme Trail is the mountain race of Val di Zoldo, one of those Dolomites valleys that stay off the mass circuit. It is organised by Atletica Zoldo ASD, a volunteer group from the valley that has been putting on the event since 2013, and the result is a weekend with six distances and a village feel: start and finish in Forno di Zoldo, with Monte Pelmo and Civetta as the backdrop.

Six distances for every level

The flagship is the DXT 103K: 102 km and around 6,500 m of cumulative climbing, starting Friday at 22:00 with a 30-hour limit. Then come the 72K (76 km and 4,800 m), the 55K (58 km and 3,600 m), the 35K (38 km and 2,470 m), the 22K (21 km and 1,140 m) and the 11K (13 km and 670 m), designed so locals and partners can run too.

Night rules the 103K

Starting at 22:00 means running with a head torch from the first metre. The course crosses the Duran, Staulanza and Cibiana passes, with time gates at km 32 (07:00), km 58 (14:30), km 69 (18:30) and km 84 (21:30). Anyone arriving late is out: the organisers are strict with cut-offs because high mountain terrain does not forgive.

Proper Dolomites terrain

There are no farm tracks here: scree, alpine grass, forest and sections where hands help. The climbing is constant, long ascents alternating with technical descents. June weather changes fast, with afternoon storms and cold nights on the passes, so mandatory kit is not a formality.

Entry and logistics

Registration runs through the official website and Italy requires a sports medical certificate. Getting there needs a car: Belluno is 40 minutes away and the A27 motorway is at Longarone, half an hour off. Venice and Verona airports are about two hours. Sleeping in Forno di Zoldo or Fusine is the most convenient option, especially with a 22:00 start.

If you want more mountain races in the country, check the races in Italy and build the trip with the planner.
