The Walser trails of Monte Rosa

Monte Rosa Walserwaeg by UTMB follows the tracks of the Walser community in the Aosta Valley: 120 km and 8,200 m of climbing starting and finishing in Gressoney, from 15 to 18 July 2027. On total ascent it is Italy’s hardest UTMB World Series race after the Tor des Géants.

The programme reaches down so nobody is left out: 82 km with 6,300 m, 43 km with 3,100 m, 35 km with 1,800 m and 15 km with 650 m, plus a kids race. Each distance has its own start day, so the valley lives four days of party.

A course of glacier and high meadows

The route climbs from Gressoney’s 1,600 m to the passes facing Monte Rosa, with snowfields, scree and alpine meadows. The hardest section comes at night: temperatures up high drop to 3-5 °C even in July.

Preparation and logistics

July in the Aosta Valley is warm in the valley floor and cold up high: run in layers and change them fast. Mandatory kit is the UTMB standard and it is checked at bib collection.

Gressoney is 90 minutes from Turin and two hours from Milan; a car is almost essential. Book accommodation in January and keep Ayas Valley or Champoluc as fallbacks. More mountain races at /en/races/italia/valle-d-aosta/ and kit at /en/planner/.
