What the Ultra Tour du Beaufortain is

The Ultra Tour du Beaufortain is the secret ultra of the French Alps: 110 km and 8,000 m of climbing around the Beaufortain massif, starting and finishing in Queige at the foot of Albertville. Only 600 bibs and a 30-hour cut-off make it a filtering race: no crowds here, just real mountains.

A route of lakes and high pastures

The course passes Lac de Roselend, high refuges and villages such as Beaufort, famous for its cheese. There are no glaciers to cross, but there is continuous climbing, sections above 2,000 m and long descents that punish the legs. It is a classic Alpine tour, with the advantage that you can sleep in the same place every night.

30 hours for 8,000 m

The cut-off looks generous and is not: 8,000 m of climbing demands steady pacing and very careful night management. Those who fall asleep at aid stations do not finish. Those who eat, walk the climbs well and keep moving do.

An easy Alpine destination from Spain

Queige is 90 minutes from Geneva and Lyon, and eight hours by car from Barcelona or Madrid via the Alpine tunnels. The area is quiet, beautiful and far cheaper than Chamonix, making it a good base for a mountain week. To combine with other Alpine races, check the regional race calendar and plan the trip with the planner.
