What the Ultra Marin is
The Ultra Marin is Brittany’s biggest trail event and one of France’s most crowded long-distance races: 10,000 runners across all distances, with the 175 km Grand Raid as the flagship. The route circles the entire Gulf of Morbihan, starts and finishes at Vannes harbour and includes a boat crossing between Locmariaquer and Arzon. It looks like a coastal stroll and ends up being a lesson in patience.
An ultra without mountains
There are no mountain passes here: total ascent is around 1,900 m over 175 km. The wear comes from elsewhere: sand in your shoe, wet rock on the coast, narrow customs paths, constant Atlantic wind and a 42-hour cut-off that invites you to start too fast. The winner is whoever walks the last 40 km well.
The tide rules
The gulf has one of Europe’s strongest tides in its class and the route is conditioned by it. That means water sections, passages that close and logistics the organiser adjusts every year. This is not a detail: it is why this race looks like no other.
Planning the trip
Vannes is a small, handsome city with a harbour, walls and oyster restaurants. Arrive on Thursday, collect your bib without rushing and spend Friday resting. To combine the race with tourism, check the regional race calendar and sort accommodation and logistics with the planner.
360Complete Pack
Entry to the Ultra Marin
RegistrationAn event capped at 10,000 places to protect the gulf trails. Each distance has its own quota and some sell out within hours.
Tips
- •The Grand Raid quota goes first: note the opening date
- •You can run the 175 km solo or in teams of four
- •Check the medical certificate: it is mandatory for trail in France
- •Bib collection requires the documents in hand, no exceptions
Where to sleep for the Ultra Marin
AccommodationThe gulf is a holiday destination in June: rooms fill up and prices rise. Book in Vannes if you want to walk to the start and the finish.
Tips
- •Vannes centre or harbour: the most convenient for start and finish
- •Gulf islands (Île aux Moines, Île d'Arz): unique experience, book very early
- •Sarzeau and Arzon: close to the 100K start and cheaper
- •Cottages and campsites on the south shore as plan B
Gear for a full lap of the gulf
GearThe challenge is not cold or altitude, it is time on your feet. There is sand, wet rock and customs path, and the Atlantic wind never stops.
Tips
- •Shoe with grip on wet rock, not just cushioning
- •Technical socks and a mid-race change: sand gets everywhere
- •A real waterproof: Brittany in June can rain at 15 degrees
- •Mandatory head torch at night and spare battery for 42 hours

- •Soup and potatoes at night stations work wonders
- •Electrolytes: wind and humidity make you sweat more than you think

Frequently Asked Questions
- When is the Ultra Marin held?
- It runs on the last weekend of June. The 2027 edition is expected from 25 to 27 June (estimated date), with staggered starts from Vannes, Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys, Sarzeau, Auray, Baden and Séné depending on the distance.
- How much climbing does the 175 km Grand Raid have?
- Very little for the distance: around 1,900 m of total ascent. This is not a mountain race but a test of management, feet and head, with sand and coastal path that break you more than any climb.
- Do I need to book accommodation far in advance?
- Yes. Vannes and the gulf islands host 10,000 runners plus companions on the best June weekend of the year. Outside Vannes, villages on the south shore such as Arradon, Sarzeau and Locmariaquer are the realistic option.
