The trail of the corsair city

The Trail de la Côte d’Émeraude is the coastal race of Saint-Malo, the walled city guarding the Rance estuary. The 54 km starts on Saturday and follows the coastal path through beaches, dunes and small harbours, with 1,200 m of climbing in boardwalks and short rises.

Sunday brings the 32 km, gentler and aimed at anyone wanting the distance without Saturday’s price. Both finish by the sea with the walled city as the backdrop.

The organiser is Saint-Malo Sports Loisirs, with over 1,000 volunteers across the two days. The route passes the Pointe de la Varde, Rothéneuf and the Conchée fort, with views to the Chausey islands.

Preparation

This is a runnable trail with little climbing, but dune sand and Channel wind punish the quads. Train steady paces and get a session or two on sand. Mandatory kit is minimal: windproof, reusable cup and charged phone.

September in Brittany is mild but can rain. Sleeping inside the walls turns the weekend into a break. More Breton races at /en/races/francia/bretana/ and kit at /en/planner/.
