The Jura ultra, between France and Switzerland

The Ultra Trail des Montagnes du Jura starts in Métabief and heads into the ridges of the massif, with sections that touch Swiss soil before returning to France. The flagship race adds up to 175 km and 7,000 m of climbing, gentle but relentless, almost all on forest track and fir-lined singletrack.

The race starts on Friday evening and finishes on Sunday: two nights of effort, with the hardest stretch on the descent towards base camp in the small hours of the second night. The 105 km and 75 km share much of the route, so the atmosphere is the same at every aid station.

A relay format too

Besides the individual races, the UTMJ offers a 300 km relay and a 175 km team event, a way into ultra running without going solo.

Weather and preparation

In early October the Jura brings fog, rain and 5 °C nights. Train with a headlamp, test your warm layers and plan nutrition hour by hour.

Métabief has resort hotels and apartments, and Pontarlier is 15 minutes away. More ultras at /en/races/francia/borgona-franco-condado/ and kit at /en/planner/.
