Peña Roya Trail: Clay Cliffs and Riverside

The Peña Roya Trail is the mountain race of Caparroso, a town in the Ribera of Navarre that turns out every October to welcome runners. Organized by Club de Atletismo Caparroso and an official event of the Navarre Athletics Federation, it reaches its 11th edition on Sunday, October 25, 2026.

The name comes from Peña Roya, a landscape of ochre and reddish clay and gypsum cliffs reminiscent of the Bardenas, with the ruins of a church on top and the Aragón river winding through the trees. It is an unusual and photogenic setting for a race.

A Course for Every Level

There are three options, all starting and finishing in town:

  • 17K with 420 m gain: the long course, on tracks, paths and climbs up the cliffs
  • 8K with 225 m gain: ideal for a first trail or for racing fast
  • 3K non-competitive with 50 m gain, plus a non-competitive 17K walk
  • Free kids’ races from 10:00 AM

The terrain is very runnable: this is not high mountain, but a fast trail where October mud, if it rains, is the main enemy.

Race Day in Caparroso

The 17K walk starts at 9:30 AM and the 8K and 17K races at 11:00 AM. After the finish there is a community paella (12 €, booking required at registration) and changing rooms at the sports hall. The atmosphere is that of a town fully behind its race.

The Ribera of Navarre Beyond the Race

Use the weekend to visit Olite and its castle, the local wineries or the Bardenas Reales. Check out the rest of the races in Navarre and plan your calendar with the planner.
