Desafío Galayos
Desafío Galayos is a mountain trail race covering 20 km through the Sierra de Gredos, starting and finishing in Arenas de San Pedro (Ávila). In 2026, it hosts the Spanish Club Ultra Trail Championship (FEDME), the Castilla y León Ultra Trail Championship, and the Guardia Civil Mountain Racing Championship.
The course
20 kilometers of pure mountain trail in the heart of Gredos:
- Demanding climbs along paths that weave through granite blocks toward the Galayos, one of the most spectacular rock formations on the Iberian Peninsula.
- Technical descents that demand focus and solid downhill technique.
- Stunning scenery: glacial cirques, granite spires, crystal-clear gorges, and views over the Tiétar valley.
- 1,200 m of elevation gain that turn these 20 km into a real high-mountain challenge.
The Galayos and Sierra de Gredos
The Galayos are a cluster of granite needles and towers rising on the southern face of Sierra de Gredos, forming one of the wildest landscapes in Castile and Leon. Almanzor peak (2,592 m) dominates the area, though the race course runs at lower elevations. Wildlife includes Spanish ibex, black vulture, and imperial eagle, while vegetation transitions from oak and chestnut forest at lower altitudes to broom scrub and bare rock on the ridges.
