Trail Desafío del Carbón

The Desafío del Carbón is a mountain race held in Urbiés, a parish of the municipality of Mieres, in the heart of the Turón valley. Organised by Club Deportivo Cuenta Atrás, its third edition took place on 8 February 2026 and keeps alive the tribute to the mining tradition that shaped these Asturian coal basins for decades.

A route through the Turón valley

In 2026 the race offered two routes: the Trail 22K (around 21 km and 1,360m of positive elevation) and the SpeedTrail (about 12 km and 900m D+). Both run through forests, meadows and mountain paths, linking tracks that recall the old coal-hauling routes and villages of the valley.

The climbing is demanding for the distance: your average pace will be slower than the kilometres suggest, so train hills and, above all, technical descents on wet ground.

February in Asturias: prepare your gear

A winter date means mud, cold and a chance of rain. Shoes with good grip, a light windproof layer and socks that do not soak through make the difference. The organisers publish final information on their registration page, so check the rules and the date of the next edition there before planning your trip.

Mieres and the Turón valley beyond the race

After the race the area deserves a relaxed visit: the valley preserves nearby mining and industrial heritage and hearty Asturian food, ideal to refuel. Discover other races in the Asturias region and plan your season with the race planner.
