UltraVimar 2027: 95 km through the Baix Empordà

UltraVimar is not just another ultra on the Catalan calendar. It starts and finishes in Platja d’Aro, runs along coastal paths above the Mediterranean and on the tracks of the Gavarres hills, and it carries an idea: every entry funds social housing projects in the Baix Empordà. Fundació Vimar organises it with support from the local club.

Three ways to run it

The flagship race is 95 km with 2,825 m of climbing, split into 4 stages with a 36-hour limit. For those who prefer a collective format there is the 102.7 km version in 7 stages for teams of 2 to 6 runners: each team decides who runs each leg, with at least two runners on course at all times. And to start out or to support a friend, the 16.3 km Trail Vimar.

The route

The course mixes three very different terrains. Coastal paths give the fastest and most photogenic kilometres, with the sea on one side and pines on the other. Forest tracks inland add climbing and shade, while the Gavarres sections concentrate the technical running: stone, roots and carved steps. Most of the night is run on wide tracks and paths, which lets you hold a rhythm and manage aid stations properly.

Entry and logistics

Entries open on the official website and close when the bibs run out. Bib collection happens in Platja d’Aro the day before, with a mandatory kit check: foil blanket, headlamp with spare batteries, charged phone, reusable cup and a minimum water reserve. In May the coast is mild by day and damp at night, so light warm layers are not optional.

If you are travelling, check the other races in Catalonia and build your weekend with the trip planner.

Who it is for

It is a demanding but very manageable ultra: the stage format lets you eat and rest in order, and the climbing, while not brutal, punishes going out too fast. If you have finished a mountain marathon and want to step up to 90 km, this is one of the Catalan ultras with the best balance of difficulty and logistics.

  • •A hotel room with a bathtub is worth every euro after 95 km.

Kit for 95 km on the Costa Brava

Gear

May in the Baix Empordà is mild by day and damp at night: dew makes the coastal paths slippery and the sea breeze chills you at every stop.

Browse all gear

Tips

  • •Mid-depth lugs and a grippy outsole for wet rock: there are stone sections and steps next to the sea.
  • •Light waterproof and arm sleeves: nights on the coast can drop below 10 °C with wind.
  • •Powerful headlamp and spare batteries: the race runs across 4 stages and much of it is at night.
