Ultra Trail Moncayo: the roof of the Iberian System

Ultra Trail Moncayo (UTM) is the big trail running event on Moncayo, the highest mountain of the Iberian System (2,314 m). It is organised by the Asociación Atlética Añón de Moncayo from the small village of Añón, on the northern slope of the massif in the province of Zaragoza, and every spring it draws runners from Aragón, Navarre, La Rioja and the Basque Country.

The course dives straight into the Moncayo Natural Park: beech and oak woods, pine forests and, above them, the bare quartzite ridge that reaches 2,240 metres on the race route. It is very different from the Pyrenees: less technical rock, but endless climbs and scree that punish the legs.

Four distances for every level

  • Ultra 70K (3,850 m D+): the flagship race, starting at 6:00 with a 14h30 time limit. It can also be run in pairs.
  • Marathon 44K (2,500 m D+): the summit ridge in marathon format.
  • Half Marathon 23K (1,130 m D+): a great step into mountain running.
  • Speed Trail 10K (380 m D+): fast and beginner-friendly.

The UTM by Stages challenges (Platinum, Diamond and Gold) combine Saturday and Sunday races for those who want to make the most of the weekend.

Cut-offs and gear: Moncayo is unforgiving

The Ultra has cut-offs at Talamantes (km 16.1, 2h45), Morana (km 35, 6h45) and the Moncayo Sanctuary (km 55.4, 11h30). The mandatory kit list is that of a high-mountain ultra: headlamp, hooded waterproof jacket, survival blanket, long tights, gloves and a litre of water at the start. In late May the ridge can wake up to cold wind and fog even when it’s warm below, so take it seriously.

The records show the level: 7:31:54 by Jesús Bailo and 9:18:44 by María del Carmen Biosca in the 70K.

Moncayo beyond the race

Añón is 20 minutes from Tarazona, with its Mudéjar cathedral and Jewish quarter, and very close to Veruela Monastery and the Garnacha vineyards of Campo de Borja. A perfect weekend combining mountains, heritage and good wine.
