Trail 2 Heaven: the Pyrenean Cross-Border Race

Trail 2 Heaven is one of the few mountain races that link two countries in a single route. Starting from Los Llanos del Hospital, at the foot of the Aneto (3,404 m), the course climbs toward France along a path used since the Middle Ages by armies, traders, smugglers, refugees, and travelers of every kind. The finish is in the town of Benasque, the valley’s capital and namesake of the race.

Four distances: from the family walk to the cross-border ultra

Trail 2 Heaven offers four routes designed for every level:

  • Trail 2 Heaven 50K: 50.4 km and 2,950 m D+, crossing into France via the Hospice de France and the Bois de l’Impératrice
  • Benasque Trail 2 Heaven 35K: 35.9 km and 1,600 m D+, passing the Villamorta lakes, the Aigualluts waterfall, and the Renclusa refuge
  • Glaciar Trail 2 Heaven 26K: 26.8 km and 1,100 m D+, a loop around Los Llanos del Hospital with views of the Maladeta Massif
  • Trail & Walk 2 Heaven 17K: 17.7 km and 415 m D+, with the option to walk it, ideal for a first mountain race

Only the 50K actually crosses the border, so if you sign up for it, don’t forget your ID or passport. Work out your fueling needs with the nutrition calculator before deciding how to split gels and bars between aid stations.

The Watchful Aneto and the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park

The entire route runs in the shadow of the Aneto and within or along the edges of the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, one of the most spectacular high-mountain areas in the Pyrenees. The 50K and 35K climb above 2,000 meters, with rocky sections and patches of residual snow even in September, while the 26K and 17K stay at more accessible elevations without giving up the scenery of glacial lakes and black pine forests.

Benasque Beyond the Race

Benasque is the gateway to the highest reaches of the Aragonese Pyrenees, with direct access to Cerler, the Aran Valley, and the French border via the Portillon de Benasque. Use race weekend to explore the Aragon region or plan your full trail season with the race planner, pairing Trail 2 Heaven with other Pyrenean races.
