Kaxtrail

Kaxtrail is a mountain race of 45 km and about 3,000 m of positive elevation held on 24 October 2026 in Erratzu, in the Baztan valley (Navarre). It is a one-off special edition: a tribute to Xabier Rekarte «Kaxtel», a local of Erratzu, on the tenth anniversary of his death.

A 45 km course through the mountains of Erratzu

The official profile marks three summits: Gorramakil (1,085 m), Iparla (1,044 m) and Auza (1,306 m), the highest point. That adds up to 3,000 m D+ over Navarrese Pyrenean terrain, with beech forests, ridges and long descents that punish legs and feet. The start is at 8:00 am.

Three ways to take part

  • Individual 45 km race: the main challenge, for the best-prepared mountain runners.
  • Pair relay (men’s, women’s or mixed): two runners share the course.
  • 24 km hiking walk: at an easy pace, through the most beautiful parts of the route.

A race built by the community

Kaxtrail grew out of auzolan, the Basque tradition of community work: a group of Erratzu locals organises everything to keep Kaxtel’s memory alive along with his values of passion for the mountains, friendship and cooperation. After the race there will be cultural, musical and gastronomic events in the village.

2026 edition logistics

Registration is handled by Kronoak through RockTheSport: €50 for the individual race, €70 for pair relays and €10 for the walk. It opened on 5 March and closes on 17 October.

The Baztan beyond the race

October is the best time of year in the Baztan for the autumn colours. Take the chance to stroll around Elizondo or visit Zugarramurdi. For more races in the region, see the Navarre race calendar and add this one to your planner.

According to the official race regulations
