Hermannslauf

The Hermannslauf is an institution of German running: since 1972 it has linked the Hermannsdenkmal, the colossal Arminius monument above Detmold, with Sparrenburg Castle in Bielefeld, crossing 31.1 km of the Teutoburg Forest. In 2027 it holds its 55th edition on the last Sunday of April, as tradition dictates.

A course along the Hermannsweg

The route partly follows the Hermannsweg, one of Germany’s best-known long-distance trails. It covers 31.1 km with around 515 m of climbing and 710 m of descent on forest tracks, sandy paths, some tarmac and the final cobbles up to the Sparrenburg. It is not technical, but the rolling climbs along the Teutoburg ridge and the pace set by the pack make it a tough race.

A people’s festival

With around 7,000 participants and thousands of spectators along the way, the Hermannslauf has the atmosphere of a big city marathon in the middle of the forest. The start by the monument and the finish beneath the castle walls are two of the most iconic images on the German calendar.

The Teutoburg beyond the race

The Externsteine, sandstone formations a few kilometres from Detmold, and the LWL open-air museum in Detmold round off the trip. Find more races in North Rhine-Westphalia, the rest of Germany and plan your season with the race planner.
