Chianti Ultra Trail: 123 km through vineyards

The Chianti Ultra Trail by UTMB turns the most photographed corner of Tuscany into a four-day trail festival. The base is Radda in Chianti, a stone village on a hilltop, and the setting is Chianti Classico: terraced vineyards, cypress trees, medieval castles and farm tracks that link up without a break. This is not high mountain racing, yet nobody calls it easy: the UTCC 123K stacks up 5,200 m of climbing.

Five distances, one party

The flagship is the UTCC 123K, starting on Saturday at 04:00 and passing the 25 castles of the Ancient League of Chianti before returning to Radda. Below it sit four options: the CUT 73K (3,000 m), the CMT 46K (1,650 m, starting Friday from Castellina in Chianti), the CHT 20K (920 m) and the CWR 10K (400 m), the last two on Sunday from Gaiole in Chianti and Radda. More than 3,000 runners from around fifty countries finish across the weekend.

What the course is like

The first 40 km of the 123K are the fastest: rolling hills, vineyards and gravel. The second half rewrites the script with the climbs to Monte Luco and Monte San Michele, where the surface turns rougher and the legs stop forgiving. The organisers are clear that the profile is not explosive but relentless: nobody wins Chianti on a climb, you win it by adding up hours.

Golden Ticket to Western States

The competitive hook sits with the elite: the top two men and top two women of the UTCC 123K take a Golden Ticket with direct entry to the Western States Endurance Run. That has made Chianti a compulsory stop for anyone chasing an American slot without flying across the Atlantic twice.

Entry and logistics

Registration runs through the UTMB website, with different windows per distance and quotas that disappear in the long races. Italy usually requires a sports medical certificate, so sort it early. Florence is 50 km away and Pisa 100 km: hiring a car at the airport is the practical way to move between Radda, Castellina and Gaiole. March weather is unstable, cold in the morning and mild at midday, and the pre-dawn start means sleeping nearby.

To compare with other races in the country, browse the races in Italy and plan your trip with the planner.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Chianti Ultra Trail 2027?
From Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 March 2027. The flagship UTCC 123K starts on Saturday at 04:00 from Radda in Chianti; the CMT 46K runs on Friday and the short distances on Sunday.
Which distances are there?
Five: UTCC 123K with 5,200 m of climb, CUT 73K with 3,000 m, CMT 46K with 1,650 m, CHT 20K with 920 m and CWR 10K with 400 m.
What is the UTCC Golden Ticket?
The top two men and top two women of the UTCC 123K receive a Golden Ticket granting direct entry to the Western States Endurance Run.
How do you get to Radda in Chianti?
Florence is about 50 km away and Pisa about 100 km. From either airport a hire car is the realistic option: Chianti villages are poorly served by public transport and the long race starts before dawn.
Can beginners take part?
Yes. The CWR 10K and CHT 20K are entry-level trail races, and the CMT 46K is a fair step up if you have run mountain half marathons. The UTCC 123K requires night running and sleep management.
