The winter ultra of the Haut-Bugey
The Trace des Maquisards began as a tribute to the Resistance maquis who hid in the Haut-Bugey forests of the Ain. Today it is a winter ultra of 100 km and 3,300 m of climbing, starting in Oyonnax at five in the afternoon, already in darkness.
The route links forest singletrack, ridges and small villages of the southern Jura, with the Hauteville massif as its high point. February can bring snow, ice or mud, so the race changes every year.
Solo, pairs or short
The 100 km can be run solo or in pairs with a changeover in Cize, home of the life base. The 35 km short race lets you sample the atmosphere without the night shift.
Preparation
Train with a headlamp, run at night and get used to the cold. Mandatory kit is strict: headlamp, spare batteries, windproof, thermal blanket, whistle and charged phone. Poles help on the ramps around km 70.
Sleeping in Oyonnax or Nantua is easiest. More winter ultras at /en/races/francia/auvernia-rodano-alpes/ and kit at /en/planner/.
