Trail Mina de la Plata: Racing Through Madrid’s Sierra Norte
Trail Mina de la Plata is a mountain running race organized by the Bustarviejo Town Council that follows the historic trails of the town’s ancient silver mines. The 4th edition takes place on April 26, 2026 with start and finish at the Plaza de la Constitución.
The race is part of the Madrid Mountain Running Cup circuit organized by the Madrid Mountain Sports Federation, making it a key date for runners competing in the regional series.
Three Distances for All Levels
Trail Mina de la Plata offers three competitive courses suited to different runner profiles:
- Mucho Trail (20 km, 1,150m D+) — The flagship distance, scoring points for the Madrid Cup. A demanding course with over 1,000 meters of elevation gain through Sierra Norte trails and paths.
- Trail (14 km, 850m D+) — A medium distance ideal for those seeking a mountain challenge without the full 20 km commitment.
- Sprint Trail (8 km, 400m D+) — A short format perfect for trail running beginners or those who prefer a more explosive distance.
Staggered starts begin at 9:30 AM, with bib collection from 8:00 AM at the start area.
Bustarviejo and the Silver Mines
Bustarviejo is a village in Madrid’s Sierra Norte at 1,222 meters altitude, on the slopes of the Sierra de la Morcuera. The course passes through a natural environment of great value, including the ruins of the historic silver mines that were active from the 17th century until the late 1800s.
The trails combine oak and pine forests with mountain meadows, offering panoramic views of the Sierra de Guadarrama and the Lozoya Valley. In April, the mountains are in full spring bloom, with pleasant running temperatures and the landscape at its best.
Semi-Self-Sufficiency and Aid Stations
The Mucho Trail and Trail distances require semi-self-sufficiency: runners must carry their own supplies (water, food, clothing) in addition to mandatory gear. The organization provides solid and liquid aid stations on course, but no plastic cups are available — bring your own bottle or cup.
Madrid Mountain Running Cup
The 20 km distance scores points for the Madrid Mountain Running Cup, attracting federation runners from across the region. Categories range from Junior to Veterans B, with overall men’s and women’s standings.
