Cursa Ibérica Figueroles: the Iberian paths of l’Alcalatén

The Cursa Ibérica Figueroles is a trail running race held entirely within the municipal boundaries of Figueroles, a small village in the l’Alcalatén region, inland from Castellón. It was born with the idea of promoting outdoor sport while recovering the ancient Iberian paths that once crossed these hills, giving them a second life under runners’ feet. In 2026 it reaches its twentieth edition, a true symbol of continuity in the Castellón trail calendar.

Organized by Run Addiction, the race keeps a simple, accessible format: a single distance of 17 kilometres with around 800 metres of positive elevation gain, open to both runners and hikers. The course is marked with bright-colored ribbons and paint marks, and has a maximum cut-off time of 4 hours.

A 17K route across Mediterranean hills

The layout combines roughly 60% trail and 40% mountain path, making it a genuinely off-road course, far from tarmac. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Start at 08:00 from Calle Alcora, in the heart of Figueroles.
  • Stony, dry terrain typical of inland Castellón, with constant ups and downs.
  • Stretches of scrubland with little shade, where the September sun makes itself felt.
  • Recovered historic paths linking spots across the municipality.

With its 17K and ~800m of gain, it’s a demanding yet achievable distance, ideal for anyone after a morning trail without having to face an ultra.

September inland in Castellón

Mid-September is a transitional date: summer is easing off but the heat lingers inland, where humidity is lower than on the coast but the sun beats down hard in the middle of the day. That’s why the early 08:00 start is key. Carrying enough water, sun protection and a cap is not optional: the l’Alcalatén scrubland offers little shade and you’ll want to manage hydration carefully over the 17 kilometres.

Figueroles and l’Alcalatén beyond the race

Figueroles is part of the l’Alcalatén region, an inland area known for its tile-making tradition and its Mediterranean mountain landscape at the foot of the Penyagolosa massif. A race weekend is the perfect excuse to discover the neighbouring villages —l’Alcora, Lucena del Cid— and explore the surroundings of Penyagolosa, the province’s highest peak.
