Paleotrail Loarre

The Paleotrail Loarre is not just another mountain race: it is run over the Sierra de Loarre, one of the palaeontological hotspots of Huesca, with dinosaur egg sites such as Santa Marina. It is organised by the Loarre Town Council with technical advice from Peña Guara and the Loarre Palaeontological Museum, and its solidarity bib 0 funds the research of the MuseoLab.

There are two routes: the demanding Quebrantahuevos (21K) and the friendlier Trepadinos (13K), ideal for a first mountain race.

A high-mountain route

Both races start in Loarre square (771 m) and share the first climb to the Santa Marina hermitage and refuge (1,357 m), about 586 m of ascent. The Quebrantahuevos continues towards Collada Tallada and takes on the most technical part: a limestone ridge climb to the Puchilibro (1,596 m), with views of the Pyrenees and, on clear days, the Moncayo. The Trepadinos drops by track to Loarre Castle and returns to the finish via the Los Mallos ravine.

November in the sierra

In mid-November the weather in the range is cool and changeable: gloves, a hat and a windbreaker are essential. The Quebrantahuevos starts at 10:00 and the finish closes at 14:00, so keep a steady pace.

Loarre beyond the race

It is worth staying for the weekend: Loarre Castle, one of the best-preserved Romanesque fortresses in Europe, and the MuseoLab offer visits on Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday there is a guided geology walk to Santa Marina.
