5-Litre Trail Running Vest: When It's Enough and Which to Buy

TrailRunTemple·

A 5-litre trail running vest is the best-selling size and, for most runners, the only vest they need: it covers almost every mountain race up to a long half marathon. The trick is knowing where its limit is before you sign up for a race with mandatory gear.

What fits in 5 litres

Loaded realistically:

  • 2 × 500 ml soft flasks in the front pockets (1 L of water).
  • 4-6 gels or bars across front and side pockets.
  • A thin windbreaker or ultralight jacket folded in the back.
  • Phone, emergency blanket and whistle: the minimum many short races require.

What doesn’t fit comfortably: a seam-sealed waterproof jacket, a second thermal layer, a headlamp with spare battery and food for more than 4-5 hours. If the rules demand all that, you need more litres.

How far a 5 L vest takes you

RaceIs 5 L enough?
Vertical K, 10-21 km racesYes, ideal size
21-30 km with aid every 7-10 kmYes
Mountain marathon (42 km)Borderline: depends on mandatory gear
Ultra of 50 km or moreNo: go up to 10-12 L

Quick rule: if the rules require a seam-sealed waterproof jacket and a second layer, 5 L is too small.

The 3 five-litre vests we recommend

Salomon ADV Skin 5: the best

The ADV Skin 12 stripped to the essentials: same bounce-free SensiFit fit, same front pockets and two 500 ml soft flasks included.

NNormal Race Vest: the race vest

Kilian Jornet’s brand, no chest straps: it fits through the fabric’s own stretch. Very light, with a women’s cut. Sizing is critical.

INOXTO 5L: the budget pick

The cheapest way to move from a waist belt to a vest. Light, with front flask pockets and room for a reservoir. It doesn’t fit like a Salomon, but it’s plenty to find out whether you like running with a vest.

5 litres or 8-12?

If you’ll only own one vest and an ultra is on your horizon, buy a 10-12 L straight away: it can be cinched down for short races, but a 5 L can’t grow. If you mostly run short and fast, the 5 L is more comfortable and bounces less.
