Skyrunning Races in Spain 2026
Skyrunning takes trail running to its most vertical and technical expression. These are races that take place above 2,000 metres altitude, with gradients exceeding 30% and terrain that includes rock, exposed ridges and sections where hands are as important as feet. The International Skyrunning Federation (ISF) classifies these events into categories such as Sky, SkyUltra and Vertical Kilometer, all united by a common denominator: the mountain in its purest and most challenging form. Spain has a privileged setting for skyrunning: the Pyrenees, Sierra Nevada, Picos de Europa and the Canary Islands summits offer world-class courses. It is not a discipline for everyone — it requires mountain experience, a cool head on exposed terrain and fitness oriented towards extreme elevation gain. But if you seek the adrenaline of running along summits, nothing compares.

Tips
Train on real technical terrain: rock, scree and ridges. Forest tracks will not prepare you for skyrunning.
Footwear must have an aggressive sole and precise fit — stability on technical terrain takes priority over cushioning.
Altitude acclimatisation is key if you live at sea level: plan to arrive at least 24 hours before in the race area.
Carry thin gloves even in summer: on exposed ridges the temperature drops dramatically with the wind.
