Trail Virgen del Yugo: Racing Through the Gateway to the Bardenas

The Trail Virgen del Yugo is a classic race from Arguedas that connects the village with the Virgen del Yugo sanctuary, at the entrance to the Bardenas Reales. In 2026 it celebrates its 29th edition, one of the longest-running trail events on the Navarrese calendar.

Two courses: the long (19.67 km / 493 m D+) and the short (13.36 km / 284 m D+), both starting at 09:30 from the Polideportivo Miguel Induráin.

The Course: Between the Ribera and the Bardenas

The race leaves Arguedas heading south on trails and tracks that skirt the Bardenas Reales. The terrain is typical of the Ribera of Navarra:

  • Steppe and farmland on the flat sections
  • Ravines with short but intense ups and downs
  • Dirt tracks along the edge of the Bardenas
  • Virgen del Yugo sanctuary as the emblematic point on the route

The maximum altitude is around 491 m and the minimum 262 m, with a rolling profile that rewards a steady pace over pure climbing power.

Arguedas and the Bardenas Reales

Arguedas is the main gateway to the Bardenas Reales, Navarra’s most distinctive natural park and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. A semi-desert landscape of ravines, mesas and clay formations that looks like it belongs on another continent.

The village is also known for its caves, former dwellings carved into the rock that can be visited today, giving Arguedas a unique character.

Taking time to explore the Bardenas by car or bike after the race is practically a must. Entry is free and the main circuit is accessible with any vehicle.
