90K Camino de la Cruz

The 90K Camino de la Cruz is a point-to-point trail running race linking the city of Murcia with Caravaca de la Cruz, the fifth holy city of Christianity. The course follows the GR-127 (Camino del Río Segura) and GR-250 (Camino del Apóstol) long-distance trails, tracing a pilgrimage route that runners complete in a single day.

The distances

The event offers three distances sharing a single finish line in Caravaca de la Cruz:

  • 90K (91 km, 2,500 m D+): Murcia to Caravaca. Starts at 6:00 AM from Plaza del Cardenal Belluga, next to the Cathedral. 18-hour time limit.
  • 42K (42 km): Mula to Caravaca. Starts at 10:00 AM.
  • 21K (21 km): Bullas to Caravaca. Starts at 5:00 PM.

The course

The profile is atypical for a mountain ultra: moderate in elevation (27 m/km average), with a mix of greenways, riverside paths and forest tracks. The GR trails are waymarked and the terrain is accessible, making the 90K a good first ultra for runners seeking distance without major technical demands.

The landscape evolves from the Murcian farmland through the inland sierras, passing through the municipalities of Alcantarilla, Alguazas, Campos del Río, Mula, Bullas and finally Caravaca.

October weather

October in inland Murcia offers pleasant running conditions: temperatures between 12 °C at dawn and 22-25 °C at midday. Rainfall probability is low, although it’s worth checking the forecast in the days before. The UV index is moderate but cumulative exposure over 12-18 hours calls for sun protection.

Caravaca de la Cruz

Caravaca is one of the five holy cities in the world, alongside Rome, Jerusalem, Santiago de Compostela and Santo Toribio de Liébana. The finish line sits next to the Royal Basilica-Sanctuary of the Vera Cruz, which houses the Lignum Crucis relic. Crossing that finish line after 91 km on foot carries special meaning.

If you’re interested in trail running in the Region of Murcia, you can also explore El Valle Trail, a shorter race in El Valle Regional Park next to the capital.
